Structure of the ISNThe governing body of the ISN is a Council of 22 members elected by the membership at the Biennial Congresses from a slate of nominees prepared by the Nominating Committee. The Executive Committee members are ex officio Council members. The Nominating Committee prepares a slate which reflects the international character of the ISN, and aims to balance representation from different geographical areas of the world as specified by our constitution. The nominating committee (which serves for two years) is appointed by the President with the membership voting for some members. Each Council member serves three terms of two years each, a total of six years, and is thereafter not eligible for re-election. The Council meets at least once a year (twice in Congress years) and makes decisions on all important matters of the Society, and considers the actions of the Executive Committee.
The Executive Committee consists of 7 members that are elected by the Council (President, Immediate Past President, President-Elect, Vice President, Secretary- General, Treasurer and Editor of Kidney International). The Treasurer and Secretary-General may serve up to 3 terms of about 2 years each, whereas other officers serve one period of 2 years. The Editor of Kidney International is elected by the Executive Committee and has no specific term of office. Meetings of the Executive Committee and Council are chaired by the President. The Executive Committee makes day-to-day decisions, and its decisions must be ratified by the Council.
There is in addition a Management Committee, whose principle responsibilities are the finances of the ISN and Kidney International. It consists of the Executive minus the Vice President, plus two Council members who serve up to three terms of two years each.
